Previously, there have been many regulations put in place, and some that still exist today, but most have barely, if not at all, affected the illegal fishing or overfishing. The following are some lengths that have been taken to control overfishing, though they have not necessarily worked:
Despite all of the measures that have been put in place, overfishing is still a big problem that affects all countries. It is a disaster that needs to be fixed soon, or the fish population and diversity will die out.
- Fisheries have been advised and encouraged to stick to their quota, that limits the amount of fish that can be taken at any one time.
- There are only certain days that the fisheries can fish, that way it gives the fish a chance to breed and reproduce.
- No fishing zones have been placed around the seas to allow a safe zone for fish to live.
- Rotational fishing has been put in place to share the areas amongst the many fisheries so that all fisheries have a chance to fish.
- The nets that the fisheries use are encouraged to be large holed nets, so no little fish or baby fish can get caught.
- Many charities and other organizations, including WWF, not only advertise the issue, but also raise money in efforts to expand safety zone areas, and create a certified identification that allows customers to identify the sustainable fisheries.
- Money has also been spent on technology that improves policing the seas through monitoring the activities of fisheries.
